Baptized for the dead???

1Corinthians 15:29 Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?

Today I was listening to the "Glen Beck show" Radio Program. being that Mitt Romney is running for president Beck, who is also a mormon himself defended Romeny's religious liberty and the attack by the liberal media as a denial of religious liberty.
Now as far as Romney's Mormonism and my vote, Romney's faith will be a facter in my accepting him and voting for Him. And that is a negative aspect. But I agree that Mitt Has every right to run for the presidencv and would fight for him to keep those rights.
But then one of Becks assistants stated that baptism for the dead is in the new Testament.
This is a classic example of how people read a text and isolate it.
Yes it may sound this way by itself. But the context determines the meaning amd definitions.

First question is the identity of the dead. what is the dead?
15:21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.
22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
Could the dead be bound up in the concept of one man?

28 And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.
29 Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?

Jesus christ is the subject. which is "the dead" referred to in corinthians 28.
after all people were baptized in christ name.

Acts 19:5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name.
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

1 Corinthians 1:12 Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.
12 Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?
13 But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen:
14 And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.
15 Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.

If jesus is dead and people are baptized, Why are we are we being baptised for a dead man?
Yet if Christ is resurrected, then we are following Christ in the sure victory over death that we find in redemption.
In Christ,
Matt
